Of course... you'd need to keep it on you then even MORE!

And I understand not being sure you'll have the presence of mind to grab it in time. Of course, I'd suggest having it in hand as soon as things look even a little weird. Which sucks. I wish people didn't have to be on their guard so much, but in a society that can't even be bothered to scrape up a decent mental health care establishment (though it could afford one easily) I think there is little other choice.

Hang in there!gordsellarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11465812613427778240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21444271.post-79494021740458628702010-10-07T06:12:11.176+09:002010-10-07T06:12:11.176+09:00What gordsellar said about pepper spray. Honestly, I wanted to give him the idea that the best idea, no matter what, was to get the fuck away from me. If I had a photo of him on my phone, and he knew that, I'd be afraid he'd feel inclined to try to get my phone off me and things would get worse. The last thing I actually want is any kind of physical altercation, unless it's unavoidable.

Re: Martial arts. I've been thinking about that lately anyway, and it definitely came to mind when all of this went down. In a square go, I feel pretty confident of my ability to defend myself, but it might be nice to know I could do alright coming up against a bigger opponent. I'll look into it.

The pepper spray thing is also an option, but honestly in that situation, even if I'd had it on me, I don't think I would've thought to grab it. The only thing I could think to do as soon as it crossed that line was raise my fist. I also don't feel comfortable carrying something like that around, especially considering how often I'm around students. At school, my bag is locked away, but at the center or at various families' houses, it's not uncommon for me to just set my bag down, and while my students are all old enough to know to not fuck around with something like that, I'm around really small children really often and I think I'd be too paranoid about that. Not to mention I'm kind of a clumsy dunce myself.I'm no Picassohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06516337555349888808noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21444271.post-62960221826402038942010-10-04T17:27:03.066+09:002010-10-04T17:27:03.066+09:00glad to hear you are ok and that you have some kic...glad to hear you are ok and that you have some kick ass instincts xxsaharialhttp://saharial.tumblr.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21444271.post-79254590495034510392010-10-04T13:05:15.189+09:002010-10-04T13:05:15.189+09:00Feeling so much. P...I've said it before, I'll say it again:

Pepperspray is (apparently) legal and easy to carry. And will neutralize a sack of shit like this. I agree a camera phone is a good idea, too, but the pics will likely be blurry and so on, and someone can pummel you after you've taken a picture. Usually if you pepperspray them, they end up being unable to do much within a few seconds:

http://search.gmarket.co.kr/challenge/neo_search/search_total.asp?selecturl=total&SearchClassFormWord=goodsSearch&keywordOrg=pepper+spr&keywordCVT=&keywordCVTi=0&keyword=pepper+spray

Of course, if they know where you live, you end up needing to be extra careful. And I'm told that in any neighborhood outside, say, Gangnam or maybe Jungdong, perverts and assholes actually pay close attention to the comings and goings of women, to figure out who lives alone.

I should note, I haven't heard about the technical legality of pepperspray in use. I'd assume you couldn't buy it on Gmarket if it were illegal to use it. I will also caveat that a foreigner using it might have to demonstrate it was self-defensive. (Hence a video camera might be of use if you were alone, especially if you don't have a Korean to confirm your story.)gordsellarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11465812613427778240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21444271.post-4252521960241165692010-10-04T11:01:55.957+09:002010-10-04T11:01:55.957+09:00holy crap! And what a...Oh my goooddd what a horrifying story! And what a sad, sick little man. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. :( Shit like that...being followed/harassed is bad enough, but it's compounded by knowing that they're targeting you because of your ethnicity and gender. I would be furious too. I'm super proud of the way you handled it. As much as you might worry, it shows you can take care of yourself a hell of a lot more than some other people might be able to. And you should be proud of that.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever taken a martial art? Not only does it teach you some practical skills in dealing with creepers, but I think the biggest benefit is the confidence it gives you. Obviously I'd have to personally recommend jiu-jitsu; knowing that I could easily choke a guy out or break one of his limbs (even if he were way bigger/stronger than me) gives me a lot of peace of mind. And there are some really great gyms in Seoul! Let me know if you'd ever like more information on the subject.

Glad you're okay, Liz <3CeilingofStarshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05110238349397590911noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21444271.post-32588685851214115732010-10-03T19:04:55.523+09:002010-10-03T19:04:55.523+09:00HOLY SHIT.
