Say you have a 13 year-old and you tell him to clean up his room. He tells you no, because his friend Minsu's room is worse. That still leaves you with two messy rooms. You can do something about the messy room in your house. You can do something about the racism in Korea, by speaking up about it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21444271.post-32416728175030065572010-04-29T14:23:28.877+09:002010-04-29T14:23:28.877+09:00Ahh...haters. Usually some thought goes into what I say here. Amongst close friends, I'm a lot more.... just kind of a lot more, really. I crack politically incorrect jokes and bitch and moan with the best of them, really. When the situation calls for it and it's all light-hearted.

I also get really, really angry sometimes. Like, scary angry.

Usually I try to keep that out of this blog. But I think a bit of creeped in the other day, and you ended up being the target of it, a bit. I get emotional, too. And I'm not always an angel of rationalism. I know that. So. That was what it was.

And before anyone (other than you, of course) starts in, my controlling my temper and watching my mouth before I post something on the internet for all the world to see is not me censoring myself -- it's just the result of good social training. Shall you apologize for meeting, connecting with, and understanding people? Should youa pologize for circumspect thinking and compassion?

No, certainly not. If for nothing else (and there is plenty else) I respect you for your empathy. Why else should I read your blog if not for your ability to comprehend your students and co-workers? As a teacher you are interesting insofar as you are conscientious of those whom you endeavor to educate.

I apologize if I gave any other indication. Honestly, I read one entry by Lousy (the monkeys in make-up entry) and thought it was total garbage. I read you yet. In that same "Angriest Blogger" thing (which you're totally right, Brian is thoughtful not angry--he rarely complained about Korean culture, mostly the problems with English education in the country), I was labelled a "Happy Korea" blogger... which is so funny because I guess I'm overall positive about Korea, but I have many critical posts as well.

I avoid "negative" blogs. Especially ones that build their support by calling all of Korea "racist" and then post some of the most racist bullshit I've ever read about Korea and Koreans and call it "the truth"!!! (There is one in particular I'm thinking of who recently called me an "idiot" for missing his BRILLIANT humor.) I'm sorry you don't see it, but intelligent Koreans see the problems in their society and many are actively working to change it. Is it easy? No. But neither was it to change any country's attitudes ever.

Honestly? At least 50% (if we counted internet experience as "real, then it would be more like 95%) of my "bad" experiences in Korea have come from interactions with other expats (memorably, rescuing a drunk Korean woman from getting date raped and being told I was "cock-blocking"). The other 50% has been from drunk ajosshis who annoy the locals as much as they annoy me (the sheer number of times that one of my Korean friends has apologized--profusely--to me for the behavior of one of her less than polite countrymen is kind of surprising). And the number of each incident is a handful. I could choose to focus on these things.

It wouldn't be hard to just complain constantly about Korean people, food, and culture. But in the end, just like back home, I'd rather spend my time and energy with the thoughtful, interesting, and mostly positive people of the world.Dianahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03708273691893291730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21444271.post-54795643253673257312010-04-29T08:56:25.470+09:002010-04-29T08:56:25.470+09:00i am in love with you, marry me?

It's a lot like me...sitting somewhere between positive and negative...some days shiny and happy...and some days shitty...just like life.

If a blog is honest, then it's going to be a little bit of both. If a blog is just blowing smoke up peoples arses...then it's all negative or all positive.

A lot of the people who complain the loudest about how 'lousy' Korea is, seem to have come from sheltered, happy, upper-middle class family homes straight to Korea. Like you, I've had a life...good things, bad things, and other things...and I've worked shitty jobs. Oh yes. I've worked good jobs too.
